Creme de la Crumb (CBC Plaza)

One of the perks of working at my location is that we are two blocks away from the Library. One might assume that being so close to the Library that I would return every book on time. Doesn't happen. I like to think of late fines as doing my civic duty in keeping the Library open. You are welcome, Vancouver.

I was returning some books, late-sigh, last week so I decided to run across the street for a sandwich at the CBC Plaza. The restaurant there used to be a Bread Garden. I really don't like the Bread Garden so I never used to eat there. Last month Big M and I went to a live taping of the Debaters and we chose to meet at the Bread Garden which turned out to have changed owners and is now a Creme de la Crumb. I had a quick sandwich there and was surprised by how much I liked it but I didn't have my camera with me to get a photo.

It is no secret that I am a CBC superfan. Whenever I go to the CBC building I am constantly surprised that one of the two following situations doesn't happen:

1. Someone from CBC 1 comes running into the area where I am sitting saying something like "Somebody help- *insert host name here* has come down with a mystery illness and we need one of you to jump in and host the radio show"
or
2. I run into Jian Ghomeshi and he tells me that he remembers me from the days that we used to stalk follow his band and then declares his undying love and we jump into his Pontiac GTO and drive off into the sunset singing Moxy Fruvous songs.

As it turns out, on this day neither of those happenings occurred, again, so I just had a yummy sandwich and soup combo and went on with my regular life.

The restaurant looks pretty much the same as it did when it was a Bread Garden with a counter on one end and then some bar seating and tables at the back. There was also a bar with booze specials so it looks like you can booze it up there on hockey nights, etc.

After I had ordered I noticed there was a sign about the bar offering some drinks customized by another local blogger- Follow Me Foodie. I had already paid so I didn't try one but I will go back again as they sounded good and I really like her blog.

I went with the same sandwich that I had on that first visit: Oven Roasted Turkey Breast and Havarti with Fig Marmalade, Mixed Greens, on a Cranberry Pecan Bread. The soup of the day was Green Thai Curry Chicken Soup.

I love the presentation. For some reason serving me a sandwich on a cutting board makes me happy. Small things....

The sandwich is really good. It was grilled perfectly so the cheese was all melty and the fig marmalade gives it a really tangy flavour. I could eat a lot of that bread. It had big chunks of berries and nuts. The sandwich tasted a bit like Christmas.

The soup was a surprise. It looked to be fresh made with big chunks of chicken and veggies with the perfect amount of spiciness.

I was very pleased with my lunch, even if I didn't get a job at the CBC because of it. I am happy with the restaurant change as it means I will continue to go back there. The soup and sandwich came out to around $10.00, which is normal for the area.

I was really impressed with the drinks selection they had in the cooler. They have a really nice selection that runs beyond the Pepsi and Coke to some local and independent offerings. They also have one of the more impressive restaurant websites, probably because they offer catering as well.

Go CBC!

Crème de la Crumb Bakeshop (CBC) on Urbanspoon

PS- this rating is way lower than I think it deserves. It is one of the first places that I have really liked that Urbanspoon readers haven't. I think you should give it a try.
