Peaceful Restaurant (Davie)

I am going to be upfront and say I really wanted to like this restaurant. I love handmade noodle shops. I love meals in soup. I really thought that Peaceful Restaurant on Davie was going to be an awesome meal. Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives went to the Broadway location when they came to town. I will also admit that I may have made a menu mistake and maybe something else would have made me come away with a better experience. That being said, I was sadly let down by this lunch.

Our office has finally moved to our new central downtown location so last week I tried to fit in as many Yaletown places as I could. I actually ended up at Peaceful Restaurant by default. I chose shake with my Urbanspoon app and the place it told me to go was actually closed. So I walked a little further up the street and found the noodle house. With my earlier lunch I was able to get a seat right away. The restaurant is fairly small and popular so it filled up quite quickly after I came in.

The menu was a bit different than I was expecting, I expected mostly soup items. They have some regular menu items and then some lunch specials. I chose to go with something from the Soup Noodles section:
Sichuan Beef Soup Noodles (stewed beef in a dark spicy broth, spinach and cilantro) $7.95

The good parts first. The noodles were great. Longer than I generally like them as they are messy to eat when they are long. I liked the spinach and onions on top. The portion size was great for the price.

The bad part. The broth was a bit too salty for me, but I liked the spice level. The meat was the killer of this dish. I understand that stewing beef is generally the cheaper cuts of meat, but this:

is way too much for me. All of the beef was chewy and or full of tendons and veins. I ended up leaving the meat and broth and just finishing the noodles and veggies.

Again, maybe it was a bad menu choice for me, I am sure there are people who don't mind these bits. I am not sad that this restaurant is out of my lunchtime range now as I don't think I would be making a return visit. The service was efficient, if inattentive. All in all, not a happy lunch.

To end on the positive, it was a beautiful day for a walk and to say goodbye to my Yaletown lunchtime adventures.

  1. I have been peaceful many times as well for quick lunch meal, and i love going back everytime. I have tried pretty much everything on the menu, most of them are very delicious. Went to both locations, the broadway location and the davie location. The davie location is by far better in regards of customer service and dining experience in my opinion. Give them a second chance, you might change your mind.

  3. So I would have to agree with annonymous. Peaceful restaurant is amazing. Been there a dozen times and crave it often. I would recommend trying it again. Here are some delicious options, the cumin lamb noodles with the cut noodles, the tangy tomato egg noodles are surprisingly the best thing, the beef pancake rolls, the curry pork/chicken noodles. Honestly, I'm very picky about my food and Peaceful has to be one of my top five restaurants in Vancouver.
