Back when I worked in Gastown, in my before days, I used to have Shawarma Tuesdays (and sometimes Thursdays as well). I love shawarma. I love the smell, the rotating chicken cooker thing, watching the chicken fall as it is cut off the rotisserie, yummy sauce, hummus, I love everything about it. A shawarma plate would be the food that I would pick to be with me on a deserted island. To be specific, I would choose the shawarma plate from Casablanca Mediterranean Cuisine.
Never heard of it? I guess you haven't been spending too much in the Harbour Center Mall food court. Amid the 1985 glory of neon lights and mirrored ceilings is my favorite shawarma shop.
I haven't been back to Casablanca in about three years, so I was happy to see that it was still there and the staff was the same. Back in my 2x a week shawarma plate days, they used to know me and my order. I guess 3 years and 85lbs will change a person...
But here it is, my favorite shawarma plate:
On this plate you will find shawarma, hummus, pita, green salad (you can get tabbouleh), sauce. All pretty standard for a shawarma plate. The ingredient that put it over the edge for me is the potatoes.
For a carb loving girl, this is a great addition! I am not going to say that it is the most amazing tasting shawarma that has ever existed, but it is a very good example and generous portions. The pita is from a bag, but the rice is flavourful and the chicken is well seasoned. I like the consistency of their hummus and that it is not oily. This is in a food court, so there is not much in the way of atmosphere and it gets quite busy at lunch time.
Although I will not be resuming Shawarma Tuesdays, I will most certainly be back to Casablanca when I want to give myself a special treat or if I am magically transported to a deserted island and have to choose one food to live on forever.
The potatoes. OMG. I used to just get the potatoes, screw the Shawarma.
ReplyDeleteAlso used to love the chana masala at the Indian place in that same food court.
But DID NOT enjoy the hot dog at Big Orange.
